In the 21st century a third of all properties in Detroit were tax foreclosed and auctioned to the highest bidder. Why?

My name is Jerry Paffendorf and I've been working on projects, research, and advocacy related to tax foreclosure in Detroit for a decade.

This has given me privileged insight into the policies, philosophies, and effects of tax foreclosure.

This book project is my attempt to make it all make sense for me and you.

I'm in the early stages of writing and am looking for more people with tax foreclosure stories and insights to talk to. My intention is to write a book that fairly incorporates the views and experiences of many people, not only in Detroit and Wayne County, but in Lansing and around the state. Ultimately I want to give Michiganders and the world a better understanding of what Detroit's tax foreclosure era was, how it happened, and why it lasted for so long if it was known to cause such great harm to so many people.
